The Miracles of Jesus

By Lynn Erhorn

The gospel of  John’s ends with his report that the books of the world would be filled with the accounts of Jesus’ miracles if they were all written down.  Why did He operate in this way and what are the miracles that were included in scripture?

The Woman with the Issue of Blood (Dewey)

The Woman with the Issue of Blood

And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.” Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well.
~ Matthew 9:20-22

Jesus Heals a Blind Man

Jesus Heals a Blind Man

And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, See that no one knows about it. But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.
~ Matthew 9:27-30

The bible tells us that God chose certain people to be His spokesmen throughout the ages.  We refer to these people as “prophets,” meaning one who speaks the words of God with the authority of God.  As a means of confirming this authority, God enabled these people to do “signs and wonders.”  This was the calling card of the messengers of God, tantamount to carrying His seal.  According to scripture, however, it is also possible for some signs and wonders to performed by “false” prophets, so each of us is called to use discernment when a claim is made of a miracle performed or a word is spoken with God’s authority.  We must measure everything we witness against the revealed word of God in the scriptures with care and effective reasoning so that we are not led down the dangerous path of deception.

The most important examples of signs, wonders, and miracles were done by Jesus, God Himself made flesh.  Since His message was the most important ever delivered, His authority had to be clearly established.  In addition to leading a completely sinless life and teaching with unparalleled wisdom during His life, Jesus fulfilled many prophecies that told of the coming Messiah and further demonstrated who He was with a staggering number of miracles, some of which could only be done by the authority of God (like restoring the dead to life).  In this way, those who witnessed these miracles first hand and you who witness them here and now can know without doubt who Jesus is, how crucially important it is to place your faith and trust in Him alone, and the lengths to which a loving God will go to save us and restore relationship with us.

Here, we offer an opportunity for you to journey through the stories of these miracles, compiled with links to their appearances in the bible, with some illustrations as well.  It is our prayer that you will be awestruck and left breathless by the realization that the God who created you and the entire universe loves us so much that He would — without sacrificing one iota of His divinity — become human and offer us His presence, His teaching, His very life and death and his victorious resurrection.  He did this all in such an intimate way, so that we might be saved from depravity and eternal separation from Him.

In three short years, Jesus did these things so that those around Him would understand who He was and the importance of faith:
